JR Smith suspended 5 games for testing positive for banned substance

JR Smith has been suspended 5 games for violating the NBA drug policy. A 5-game suspension is standard for 3rd failed test for a recreational drug.

from the NY Daily News Report

“The same source indicated that Smith did not test positive for a performance-enhancing drug. If the league suspends Smith for five games that would suggest that he tested positive for marijuana since the NBA’s drug policy calls for a suspension only after a third positive test. A second offense results in a $25,000 fine while first positive test calls for the player to enter a program. Smith, the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, is currently recovering from knee surgery and is not expected to be ready for the Knicks Oct. 30 regular season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. If Smith is suspended it is unclear if the suspension will begin with the first game of the 2013-14 regular season or if it will begin when Smith is healthy enough to play. Michael Beasley Released by Phoenix Suns

After a dissapointing year and off the court incidents the Phoenix Suns have decided to release Forward Michael Beasley

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, the Suns created enough cap space by trading Caron Butler last week to soften the "financial hit stemming from Beasley's departure."

Moreover, by making the move after Sept. 1, the organization can pay part of Beasley's guaranteed money over multiple seasons in the future.

Eventhough he is still 24 years old many industry insiders are wondering whether his career is over.

Beasley averaged career lows in points (10.1), shooting percentage (40.5), rebounds (3.8) and minutes (20.8).

Former Heavyweight Champion Tommy Morrison dead at 44

Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison died in an Omaha, Neb., hospital late Sunday night. He was 44.

Morrison's longtime promoter, Tony Holden, said Morrison died at 11:50 p.m. with his wife, Trisha, beside him.

Morrison tested positive for HIV in 1996 before a fight with Arthur Weathers, effectively ending his boxing career. In the years that followed, he denied having HIV and also challenged the existence of the virus.

Holden declined to comment Monday on the cause of Morrison's death. "I don't know what the official cause of death at the hospital will be," he said. "You prepare for things like this, and still you feel like you got hit by a truck when you hear the news."

In 1993, Morrison beat George Foreman to win the World Boxing Organization heavyweight title. He lost to Lennox Lewis in 1995.
